About MyDoubleBass

MyDoubleBass was founded to provide specialised double bass guidance for students, parents, schools, and orchestra musicians seeking clarity, progress, and confidence in their playing.

While many musicians benefit from regular lessons, not every challenge requires a long-term commitment. Some students need help overcoming a specific technical obstacle. Others need guidance preparing for auditions, examinations, performances, or school orchestra commitments. Parents may simply want an experienced perspective on their child's musical development.

MyDoubleBass exists to help identify what is holding a student back and provide practical, experience-based solutions that support meaningful progress.

Many students come to me after feeling stuck despite months or years of effort.

Common challenges include:

• Inconsistent tone production

• Poor posture or excessive tension

• Intonation difficulties

• Bow control issues

• Ineffective practice habits

• Audition and examination preparation

• School orchestra and SYF preparation

• Uncertainty about learning goals or next steps

Rather than applying the same approach to every student, I focus on understanding the root causes behind each challenge and recommending the most appropriate path forward.

Depending on the situation, this may involve a consultation, short-term coaching, or ongoing lessons.

Why Students & Parents Seek My Help

Studio Philosophy

Strong Foundations

Good technique creates freedom.

Students learn fundamental skills such as posture, balance, bow control, intonation, and sound production in ways that support long-term musical development rather than short-term results alone.

A strong foundation allows students to play with greater confidence, efficiency, and enjoyment.

Understanding Before Memorisation

Students learn more effectively when they understand what they are doing and why.

Rather than relying solely on repetition, lessons encourage students to develop musical awareness, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of the instrument.

This helps students become more adaptable and confident learners.

Developing Independent Musicians

The ultimate goal is not dependence on weekly lessons.

Students should gradually develop the ability to identify challenges, practise effectively, and make informed musical decisions on their own.

Whether a student studies for a few sessions or many years, the objective remains the same: to equip them with skills that continue serving them beyond the lesson room.

• School orchestra double bass students

• Students preparing for auditions, examinations, performances, and SYF

• Parents seeking guidance on their child's musical progress

• Bassists experiencing technical limitations or recurring difficulties

• Adult learners returning to the instrument

• Students seeking a second opinion or additional perspective

• Musicians considering whether ongoing lessons are necessary

Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced player, support is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals.
